      What Goes Wrong

      401 / "Bad token" auth failures

      The 401 errors result from unauthorized access, broken OAuth trust relationship, or expired/rotated credentials.

      How we prevent it

      Service principal + certificate-based auth (not username/password), certs auto-rotated via Key Vault, and a daily token-refresh canary that pages us 6 hours before any credential expires.

      API throttling / 429 errors at peak

      A spike in throughput is observed during peak or sales seasons. It occurs after crossing the concurrency limit and the API rate limit.

      How we prevent it

      Token-bucket rate limiter, exponential backoff with jitter, parallel-worker pool tuned to each API's actual limits, and a dead-letter queue so nothing is silently dropped at peak.

      Infinite sync loops & record echoes

      Records don't update in real time, and a sync loop or ping-pong effect occurs because teh system cannot recognize changes made by humans or by the other system integration user.

      How we prevent it

      Source-of-change tagging on every write (x-integration-origin header), idempotency keys per record version, and integration users excluded from "trigger on update" filters by default.

      Mobile / offline data drifts

      Offline changes don't update instantly, and the LWW strategy overwrites changes to the same record.

      How we prevent it

      Field-level conflict resolution rules, last-modified-by-field timestamps, and a conflict-review queue surfaced to the office team rather than silently overwriting.

      Calculated / rollup field permission errors

      A particular field does not work for end users, while it works fine for admins. This leads to rollup field permission errors.

      How we prevent it

      Security model is mapped before we wire any calculated field. Every referenced entity in a formula must be readable by the role that will read the result - we document this explicitly per integration.

      Silent failures - nobody knows it's broken

      Failures go unnoticed for days unless users notice them, as there are no alerts or notifications for such issues.

      How we prevent it

      Application Insights + Log Analytics on every integration, heartbeat health endpoint polled every 60s, dead-letter queue alerts to Teams, and a weekly digest of "what nearly broke" to your IT owner.
